PyPSA Labs is a non-profit organisation advancing climate protection and energy systems research by providing development, maintenance, support and training for the open source software Python for Power System Analysis (PyPSA). PyPSA enables analysts and researchers to explore energy systems at high resolution as they transition to climate-friendly technologies.

PyPSA is an open-source Python framework for optimising and simulating modern power and energy systems on their way towards climate-neutrality. PyPSA is designed to scale well with large networks and long time series, so that it can model the variability of renewables and the flexibility needed for renewables integration in climate-protection scenarios. It is made for researchers, planners and utilities with basic coding aptitude who need a fast, easy-to-use and transparent tool for power and energy system analysis.
PyPSA was first developed in 2015 by Prof. Dr. Tom Brown and his research team at the Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies (FIAS). The PyPSA ecosystem development moved with him to the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in 2018 and then to the Technische Universität Berlin in 2021. Dr. Fabian Neumann took over as lead developer in 2018, joined by Dr. Fabian Hofmann in 2022 and Lukas Trippe in 2024, with major feature contributions from Dr. Iegor Riepin. PyPSA is now co-maintained by a broad community of individuals and companies.
PyPSA Labs was founded by members of the core PyPSA development team in 2026 in Berlin to ensure the long-term future of PyPSA and support its users. The co-founders of the university spin-off are Prof. Dr. Tom Brown, Dr. Fabian Neumann, Dr. Iegor Riepin and Lukas Trippe. PyPSA Labs is a non-profit company that funds maintenance and development work of PyPSA with support contracts, donations and workshops.
