Modelling Studies

The PyPSA ecosystem has grown by tackling demanding challenges in energy system research. PyPSA Labs takes on modelling studies where our expertise and open-source approach can make a meaningful contribution. Every project must meet four criteria:

  • Clear public benefit and interest. The research work should be of public benefit and advance the energy transition, not serve a single organisation's commercial interest.
  • Open code & open models. We only work with the open-source PyPSA ecosystem, publish our studies open access, and aim for reproducible scientific workflows wherever possible. We also contribute data and methodological developments upstream to PyPSA, PyPSA-Eur and associated ecosystem libraries, so that the wider community benefits from the work.
  • Transparent funding. We are open about who funds our work, and we protect our independence from funder influence over methodology or results. We do not accept funding arrangements where the funder can steer study design or conclusions.
  • Team fit. We have the specific expertise required to credibly answer the questions.

Track record

The PyPSA Labs team are expert research scientists who have worked across a broad range of topics in energy economics, policy, and system modelling. This research background informs both the software development and the modelling support we offer.
